The true north, strong and free

Meanwhile, today is Canada Day!

While the US and a number of states are hard at work writing hatred into the Constitution, and a haredi protester has stabbed three marchers in the Jerusalem Pride Parade, this week Canada (as well as Spain) has gone the opposite direction and approved same-sex marriage nationwide! And this isn't even a court order, this is legislative, baby! So at least the whole continent hasn't lost its mind.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

  1. I'm a proud Canadian who returned here after having lived in the US for about six years. But I should mention that the nationwide legalisation of gay marriage followed eight provincial court (and one territorial court) decisions ruling that the existing definition of marriage was unconstitutional. Ontario had had gay marriage since (I think) 2003, BC as well. Quebec had had civil unions since the late 1990s and gay marriage since 2004 (IIRC). The only places where the national law changes things significantly are Alberta, Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Territory. Alberta is the only one likely to put up a fuss (they are the most conservative of the provinces, by far).

True, Jordan, it looks like Ralph Klein might try to stir things up, but the rest of us sober Canadians are looking forward to enhanced equality in our country.
